The event was designed to be an outreach for the Classics, aimed at people interested in the subject as well as people who wanted to go onto study the subject at college or University. And it certainly succeeded, bringing many armchair Classics enthusiasts and budding Classics students face-to-face with the great and good of the Classics world.
The line-up brought 13 eminent classicists and acclaimed authors, including Mary Beard, Bettany Hughes, Tom Holland and Paul Cartledge, together under one roof. Each author spoke for 15 minutes on a particular subject from Herculaneum to the Hobbit in Latin, and then the audience had a chance to meet them and get their books signed.
